Why choose a dietitian?

Accredited Practising Dieitians (APD) or Dietitians for short are qualified allied health professionals that have undergone education at a university recognised by the Dietitians Association Australia (DAA), the official Australian body for dietitians. Our training is strictly supervised and assessed by DAA. The core OF our practice is evidenced-based approach, which means our advice is backed up by science. The official definition of dietitians by the International Confederation of Dietetic Associations is “A dietitian is a person with a qualification in nutrition and dietetics recognised by national authority[s]. The dietitian applies the science of nutrition to the feeding and education of groups of people and individuals in health and disease.”

Dietitians or nutritionists?

Dietitians are also nutritionists, but nutritionists can’t be a dietitian. Dietitians have undergone training in various settings including hospitals, the community and food service. Therefore, we are trained in providing medical nutrition therapy including diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders (IBD, IBS, Coeliac Disease), heart disease, allergies and women's health. Whilst nutritionist can also be tertiary qualified individuals and apply an evidence based approach, there is currently not official authority that assesses the qualification of a nutritionist. Which also means anyone who has completed a nutrition related course can identify themselves as a nutritionist.

Why choose a dietitian?

APDs have the most up to date knowledge on nutrition therapy as we complete at least 30 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities every year. This ensures our practice is always based on the most recent research and able to provide best interventions for our clients.
